Wisdom Man Banjo Clarke talks about the history of aborigines in Australia and their interaction with white settlers. “We are the descendants of the people who were slaughtered.” He speaks about how the people were forced to stay in certain areas and eventually became dependent on the rations handed out to them by the whites. “Political things — a lot of us old fellas, we don’t know nothin’ about political things. All this government talk about better conditions for aboriginals — it never seems to change for us older people. Might be alright for the younger people who got a bit of education, but for us old people, we don’t know what they’re talkin’ about half the time. When they go and have political meetings, we just like being left alone and being in the bush and live our own life peacefully ’till the day we die…I suppose. Live with the memories of our old people and happy days when we was a child, little children in the bush. We was all happy kids, I never went to school. School, I suppose, was the bush where I roamed and hunted. Food, rabbits — all bush tucker– porcupine, or we’d find, you know, whatever you get — seeds from the trees, watercress along the river, fish, we had plenty of food.
